I've been tracking responses to the spn_masquerade meme, and one thing I've noticed about the art fills, as well as the fics, is that a big part of what seperates bottomJared fans from those like me who can't even imagine Jared topping is the way we tend to see Jared.

For example,when I think Jared, I think this guy:



Square wide jaw, big uber masculine caveman physique, overbearing, strong, perfectly suited to manhandle others and look like the big scary or protective top, depending on what I'm in the mood for.

When bottom Jared fans imagine Jared though, they seem to be seeing this guy:



Well that or even younger.

It gets pretty weird for me, whenever I see people describe Jared as 'oh so pretty', or having Jensen call him 'little one', because it instantly pulls me out of a fic, because that's just not even remotely close to what I see when I think of Jared.

Now to be fair, I'll occasionally see Jensen like this guy:


Though most of the time, I do realize that he's closer to this:


Yet when bottomJared or bottomCas fans describe him, he ends up more like this guy:

Only bigger, tougher and more controlling.(sorry it took me a while to find a pic of Jensen that came even close to what Jared's fans seem to see Jensen as)

Which kinda makes it hard for me to get in a lot of their fics.

Wow. You know, you are right.

I like all versions to be honest. But bottom!Dean/Jensen will ALWAYS HAVE MY HEART.

When I think of twenty year old Dean he looks like Alec from Dark Angel. He was twenty three at the time he did that. He didn't lose his baby face until he hit his thirties. Now he's just . . . guh.

I think the hardest bit for me was to find a pic that shows Jensen as someone who could conceivably be a top. Cause every pic I looked at had me thinking that he looked about ready to be ravished by someone *eg*

I don't think of Jensen/Dean as a needy bottom. You can still be a top and catch, methinks.

Oh true, it's just that to me, Dean's a complete and utter sub.
I can't imagine him ever wanting to dominate anyone in bed. It's not that he won't top, if that's what his partner wants of him. But I just can't imagine him wanting to be in charge in bed. Mostly because he already carries so much responsibility in his regular life.

For me, when I see Dean, I see someone who wants to please and wants to be told he's a good boy. He can be pushy, demanding, but never dominating. And I guess that continues on in how I see Jensen.

I think I get it. I can't see him being deliberately hurtful and lacking remorse. He's too empathetic for it.

It shows through even when he was a demon. Even at his most evil, Dean still had some restraint in how he treated that girl he was with

EXACTLY!!! ALWAYS!!! He always defers to others. His own wants and needs are never in his radar. They never have been! John raised him that way!

I TOTALLY FUCKING FEEL YOU ON THAT 1000% That's what gets me. But only when dealing with Dean.

Jensen is a blank slate that people can use to create a character. RPS is an entire fandom based on AU. It doesn't count.

Dean however . . .

It's why even though I by far prefer bottom Jensen, I'll still read the occasional bottom Jared fic. As long as it's really well written and fits my kinks. But I'll rarely if ever read a topDean fic.

Because RPS is to me pretty much original fic where we cast the actors as the characters. SPN based fic though,even the AU kind tends to feel ooc whenever people make Dean the dominant one.

Yeah, it throws me out of the story and I don't bother with it once that happens.

Felisblanco is one of the few authors that writes bottom!Jared (she switch hits) that I will read. There are others too, but I only stick to them. I try to venture out occasionally, especially if I admire their work, but there are times when even that isn't a failsafe.

It's all about preference. And accurate characterization of Sam/Dean for me.

Pretty much, it's why I'm so picky in reading destiel. Normally I'd agree that both of them could switch. But the big problem for me is that bottomCas fans, just like bottomSam fans have a tendency to write Cas and Sam completely out of character, while turning Dean into an utter asshole.

It's hard to find a fic with those chars bottoming that actually feels right to me.

Dean doesn't fuck. He makes long, sweet, thoughtful love. That's a fact.

Although, he prefers to be hurt. I think he has sex with women out of pleasure. But sex with men is a form of punishment. He's too fucked up to have a sexual label.

I can't really speak to J2 dynamics since I don't read it very often, but as far as their characters? I can't see Sam as anything but the dom/top in any relationship he's in.

Dean, I can see going either way depending on the relationship. With Sam, I see him as more submissive, while with Cas, I see him as more dominant. *shrugs*

But either way... every last one of those pics is just lovely. :P

lol, for me Dean is a sub/bottom, no matter who he's in a relationship with. I just can't see him wanting to be on top with pretty much anyone.

Sam doesn't have a submissive bone in his body, mostly because he's been looking for some control in his life since he was a kid. Combined with pretty much every sex scene we've seen with Sam since s1, I tend to think that he prefers rough sex, with him in charge. The only person I could ever read him bottoming for, is Lucifer, and even then in a dub-connish, non-connish way, because Lucifer would be messing with his head.

Cas, well I see him as a switch, though I prefer reading him as a top, because he's more interesting to me as a BAMF, than as the woobie he tends to become in most bottomCas fics. In this case it's not so much the char as shown on the show, as the way that he gets twisted in fanon. With bottomCas fans turning him into this sweet woobie who has nothing to do with the Castiel as he was actually shown to be on spn. (that and I really dislike the way that bottomCas fans tend to write Dean.)
