Me myself and I

I just watched my first ep of Hannibal this week and I’m afraid to say it, but I don’t think I’ll watch it again.


I’m not saying it’s a bad show, it’s well written and I genuinely appreciated the true horror of what Hannibal is doing to Wil. The scenes are set beautifully and the acting is all around of high quality.

But… and there’s always a but, isn’t there….

I don’t think I can watch a show where the main character is an unrepentant monster who’s manipulating the decent people around him and succeeding at it.


I can take a villain like that in a movie, or in a two or three part ep of a longer series. I can even handle occasional appearances of such a villain in a longer running show, along the lines of Crowley on spn.

But I can not handle such a person as the main character of a show. Someone who only sees the people around him as toys, for him/her to play with.

It’s the main difference between shows like this and Dexter. Dexter for all that he is a psychopath as well, still cares about some people. He protects children, cares enough to keep himself to the code and only kill those who have killed others. And sure, part of keeping to his code is about not getting caught, but not all of it.

He didn’t have to save Lumen, in fact it endangered him to do so, but he still did. Because he tries not to kill innocents.

And I’m sorry to say this, but as far as I’m concerned, being rude is not a capital crime.

Of course, I’m also one of the probably very few people who hope that the last season of Dexter will be all about the truth coming out and the police coming after him, with eventually Dexter getting arrested.

But it was easier to accept Dexter getting away with his murders for so long, because you still saw him protecting the people around him.

With Hannibal, I’m supposed to keep watching a monster like this get away with his crimes over and over, with no hope of redemption, ever. (keeping in mind that this is supposed to lead to the story of the movies.) And I can not bring myself to do that.

I seem to be a bit confused.

Yes, I get that not everyone likes the same characters. Yes I get that I have a habit of liking characters not everyone else does, and that I hate char bashing on a general rule.

In fact, there's very few characters that I genuinely can't stand.

I mean, I know it's not always logical, my utter despise of Alyson Hannigan's acting is probably a huge part of that. but...

Can someone please explain to me, how anyone could ever hate Rita from Dexter?

She wasn't annoying, she was caring, smart, decent, loving. She dared to stand up for herself. She was sweet, but never cutesy and was playd by a damn fine actress.

So please tell me, how could anyone ever think she was annoying? I just don't get it.
