I love JoA. I think it's an extremely well-done show. Which is funny, because with the religious subject matter, it should make me want to run away screaming.
hmm, I don't mind religious subject matter. (and sooner or later I will write a JoA/Spike crossover*g* for exactly 'that' reason.)
But one of the things I love about JoA is that they don't preach at the viewers. They don't give a lot of answers and tell you that that's what you have to think. Instead they ask a lot of questions, making you think about those issues.
I just love the allegory about faith that it represents, and how to deal with that faith. (that and all the chars are extremely likeable*g*)
Growing up in America's Bible Belt, I had some really negative experiences with some of the downsides of religion--dogmatic closed-mindedness, intolerance, etc. Which is not to say that that's all there is to religion by any means, just that I saw enough of it to make me really cautious about such things.
But one of the things I love about JoA is that they don't preach at the viewers. They don't give a lot of answers and tell you that that's what you have to think. Instead they ask a lot of questions, making you think about those issues.
I think this is exactly right. I actually think it's a sign of how well the show is handling the subject of faith that someone like me enjoys it. I love the way the show deals with what it means to be a good person, not just by following a religious checklist but in everyday life, and how faith fits into that.
