Supernatural 522: Swan Song

I just saw an ep coda to 522 and someone commented to it with something that just plain out ... pissed me off. I thought to respond to the comment, but honestly, that wouldn't be polite to the writer of the fic, so I didn't. But I still felt I had to share my annoyance.
So hence, this post.
Comment: "In the end, it;s all about Sam and Dean and damn everyone else."
Reaction from author:"Unfortunately, the show is built around a solid foundation of selfishness and neglect."
Reaction two:"They should have named it 'The Sam And Dean' show if they were going to pull this shit."
My reaction
But... that's what it's always been. And I'm saying that as a Dean/Cas shipper, it's the main reason I liked the show to begin with.
It's about two brothers who loved each other...
Much as I love Cas, I never did and never will assume that Cas could ever be in any way more important to Dean than Sam is. And the other way around. It's what makes the pairing interesting to me, that Cas may not be the central part of Dean's life, but he's still a part of it, is still important. And part of Dean's reward for passing the 'test' is that he gets Cas back alive and now Cas can go try and help 'his family'. But that doesn't mean that Cas will be gone forever. It's not the end, it's a beginning.
Dean cares about Cas, Cas cares about Dean and now they have an open world of chances.
And oh yes, if God/Chuck brought Cas back, there's no reason to think he couldn't have brought Gabriel back as well...
Side thought, if Chuck really is God, then well... that kinda changes something about his first meeting with the boys, doesn't it ;-)
Think about it, Chuck said that he had to be God and then apologized to the boys for what he put them through, so hey Dean, you did get an apology from God*eg* You just didn't realize it.

Date: 2010-05-14 07:26 am (UTC)I have issues/insecurities re the ep, but I figure they're going to have to deal with those in season six so I'm trying to keep my positivity cap on (I have one of those apparently...), but as for the Dean/Cas thing (being an on off again shipper myself) I think you're totally right.
-Dean cares about Cas, Cas cares about Dean and now they have an open world of chances.- YES.
And Chuck/God? Messes with my head LOL.

Date: 2010-05-14 12:14 pm (UTC)I'm not particularly a shiper of anything in the show so when Cas got his angel wings back, I was sort of bummed. It felt sort of contrived. I totally gasped when Lucifer splatted him, for lack of better word, and cried when he snapped Bobby's neck but then they're brought back? Not that I'm 'Yay, killing off my favorite characters' but it seemed like an easy out. And why is God (or Chuck) stepping into bring them back when the boys were told that God was done? Deus ex machina, big time! Still, I liked Cas a little more when he was sort of a fallen angel, a little more human.
As for the Lisa thing, I was never all that keen on her from the beginning but I don't know why. So it makes sense that Dean would go to her, after all she is his family now and the show is about family.
Overall, I actually did like the episode which surprised me because I thought I'd be one of the complainers. The only thing that really bothered me, about the whole season, is what about the anti-Christ?!?! If the original goal was to end with season 5, that story line is just left out there. And maybe that was done for season 6 but that's the one thing that's annoying me!

Date: 2010-05-14 01:47 pm (UTC)I think sometimes people get so caught up in a non-canon ship they think that they can force it to become canon. I love Dean/Cas but it ain't gonna happen on the show; that's what fic is for!

Date: 2010-05-14 07:41 pm (UTC)I agree with this to an extent. I know that this show has been and always will be centered around Sam'n'Dean. That doesn't mean they have to be held in a higher regard above all other characters for all people. Hell, I've known some people to watch the show solely for Bobby. So I think it's more of a personal preference.
My preference is that it be about Sam'n'Dean but it also include other characters equally. Not saying Dean has to love anyone as much as he loves Sam, but at the same time, I'm glad Dean's cutting that chord. That was so unhealthy how attached he was to his brother. Blech.

Date: 2010-05-15 12:02 am (UTC)I love Dean/Castiel, I love Sam/Dean, IDK. Show just makes me love everyone, but I suppose for people who really ship Dean/Castiel, Castiel returning to heaven might have sucked a bit. But it's Saaaaaammmmm and Deeaaaannnnnnn!! Their love is EPIC. IT PIERCES THROUGH THE VEIL, YOU GUYS. Oh idk. I am just sad that some people don't love their love haha :(

Date: 2010-05-15 02:33 am (UTC)To me it feels like people watching the X Files and complaining about too many stories centered around Mulder and Scully, where is the respect for Mulder/Krycek and Scully/Skinner
I get that people have differenct preferences, and sure that's what fan fic and fandom is for. But there's no point in raging against the show for being the same show that it has always been. I'm betting a LOT more people would have a problem with it if it suddenly became the Dean and Castiel show
