Remakes

These days it seems like people can't wait to remake good movies, which usually end up being crap.

Which makes me wonder, if you have to remake a movie, why pick one that's still watchable on its own? Wouldn't it be more productive to take a bad movie, with a good idea behind it and remake that?

I can think of several movies, where you think, "wow that's really a fascinating idea to explore" but that's fucked up with overblown effects, bad acting and plotholes the size of the moon.

I mean, if you have to remake a movie, because you lack the creativity to come up with something of your own, wouldn't it then be better to make something you can actually improve on?.

I await the remake of Manos: the Hands of Fate. Of course, since it's the worst movie of all time, I think it would take more creativity to make it even worse because it would be too easy to make it better. XD

Normally I hate remakes. Some of them end up being great, but most of them fail. The one thing I hate is remakes of foreign movies... since they weren't released in the US, it seems like it's a new idea but it isn't. Such as The Ring, Death at a Funeral, etc. I feel like they remake foreign movies so people don't have to watch movies with subtitles.. but I'd rather watch the original in it's foreign language than a bad remake in English.

I'm a sucker for remakes of tv shows. But I have mostly low brow taste in movies, so sadly, I am the target audience for many of the bad ideas out there.

Some remakes are ok, but most are shit. Some of them aren't really even remakes as they're nowhere near to the original idea of the film, that really annoys me - it's a completely different film with a different concept and it goes by the name of a remake. Sorry that's my little rant on the subject. :S

There's been only one remake I can honestly see - Sam Rami is going back and is going to re-make "the Evil Dead" with a real budget and real affects (but still Bruce Campbell - yay!).

I'd love to see someone improve guilty pleasure movies like "Rhinestone" (Dolly Parton tries to make Sylvester Stallone a country singer - no, really) or "Second Sight" with John Larroquet as a detective and Bronson Pinchot as a goofy psychic who helps him.

Hollywood's been re-making movies pretty much since it started (google The Virginian). What I hate are the movie remakes of TV shows. They take something complex, with characters that matter to me after long time viewing, and try to condense everything into two hours.

Why yes, I did hate that new Star Trek thing. Thanks for asking. :)

But the first Evil Dead is the best - partly because it was made out of shoestrings and love.

Oh, no argument about that! But I can see where Mr. Rami would say "Y'know what I'd do if I were doing it now. . ."

Only because I do that with my fics - I re-read them and think "Y'know, if I had the time to re-write this. . ."

I know what you mean. It's gotten to the point now where I hear "remake" and I want to cringe because I automatically assume it's going to be bad.

I love the Crow with Brandon Lee, and I tend to ignore all of its sequels, but I hear they want to remake the original Crow...*shivers*
Remake= catastrophe.

Because the knee jerk reaction would be "Remake Blank? But Blank sucked!"
