I've been doing that stupid thing called thinking again. Yes you guys can stop laughing already.

Sign ups for fall_for_spike are going around again. Now I signed up last year, but then, like now I had the same question...
Why?



What is it about spuffy that has the mods hackles up so badly?

See, I wouldn't have a problem with the rules if it was a 'no het' rule or 'only adult' or... you know normal rules. It's the exclusion of just spuffy that I have a problem with.

What would you guys say if I started an all 'season of'-thing and said, anything goes except for Willow. Think about it. What would you guys say if I did that, start a com where Spike can be paired with any character, except for Willow, just cause I can't stand her character and think she would have been better off dead since s2...

Or what if I did a com like this and said... all pairings except for spander, or except for spangel? (will never happen since I like spander and spangel but you get the idea)

Wouldn't that annoy people as much as the 'no spuffy' thing does me now?
I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, just not signing up, but it stings.

Maybe I should just do a (what hasn't been done yet?*eg*) hot summerafternoon of Spike with a 'NO WILLOW' rule and see how people would like that...

This would be the exact reason why I have done two seasonal_spuffys and will do a third. My Spike/Illyria story has suffered as a result.

Aw, Dru's so cute. *g* And I like your layout. Pretty cool. I'm a big fan of Spiderman in every media - comic book, cartoon & movies.

As for the fall_for_spike thing, I agree with you. It's their community, of course, so they - whoever *they* are, I don't have that community friended - can make up whatever rules they want. But if they want to exclude all the authors who ship Spuffy, well that's certainly the way to do it. I know that even if I were interested in signing up and wasn't even planning on writing a Spuffy story, that exclusion would turn me off enough to not sign up either.

Exactly, I wouldn't mind writing a spangel fic, like that pairing as much as I do spuffy it's just the exclusion of spuffy that annoys me.

I totally concur with your thoughts here, hun. You know quite well that I am an all out Spuffy gal, and darned glad to be, but in a community that focuses on Spike it should be allowed to have him paired with Buffy. Otherwise it should be called Spike without Buffy - that would cover all the bases really.

Is stiffling over here too and doubt there will be much sleep tonight - for all the wrong reasons! *hugs* xxx

Especially when Spike/Riley, Spike/Xander, Spike/Angelus are all accepted it seems.

Obviously Xander was much nicer to Spike than Buffy was *eyeroll*

Oh but don't you know, Xander is 'the sweetest, gentlest, most understanding guy in all the world(tm)' who never does a thing wrong and was mistreated and misunderstood by all the scoobies and of course he was 'the only one that ever really got Spike' to boot.

Yeah, I think some of them are pissed about the supposed "spuffy-centricity" of summer_of_spike and set up their own con as a backlash. (I seem to remember a bunch of people whining about it way back when, because how *dare* there be Spike/Buffy fics in a Spike community? It's not like it's a popular pairing.) I agree with your frustration. I wouldn't mind participating in writing something that wasn't Spike/Buffy centric, but the way they've completely excluded the pairing just makes me not want to participate at all.

Exactly, they could have made it a slash only com, or an unconventional pairing com and I wouldn't have minded. It's the blatant anti spuffyness of it all that annoys me.

I've always saw Xander/Spike as Spike/Buffy, starts rough and ends with an understanding after a lot of developments and changes in Xander and Spike. I mean Buffy wasn't that nice to Spike in S5 and S6 now, did she? She went through a lot of developments before she liked him.

Hee yeah I don't have a problem with Spike/Xander, or whatever floats your boat *g* But most pairings with Spike, from what I've seen, often don't come off great for him on the show. And their problems with Spuffy seem based on show canon. Yet Drusilla was the original gf flirting with Angelus in front of him, and constantly dumping him for not being bad-ass. Angel, Xander, and Riley have not been that friendly at different times. Yet Spuffy deserves to be excluded because of the DT beating.

That's odd. Maybe the one who made it hates Spuffy? Or hates Buffy? Perhaps s/he thinks there are too many Spuffy fics and there should be more Spike/Other fics? Even though Spander and Spangel fics are as many as Spuffy right now.

But I think it's unfair for the Spuffies. I mean I hate Andrew... and soon I'm gonna start a searching community but I'm not gonna say: don't ask for Andrew fics. It's not fair for the Andrew fans.

Maybe the maker thought there are a lot of Spuffy fics? But that doesn't make sense coz there are many Spander (Xander/Spike) fics as well, maybe even as much as Spuffy fics. It's probably coz the maker doesn't fancy Buffy, or the idea of Spike with her.

But it's really unfair to the Spuffy shippers. If I started a Xander-seasonal or something like that, I won't exclude any pairing, even my most hated Xander pairing: Xandrew (Xander/Andrew) *shudders*

I would get if there was something polite and tactful along the lines of there being a lot of spuffy stuff out there. But the way the DT beating is brought into it, and the rant about Spuffy. Most Spike pairings are pretty dark though, so why single out Spuffy.

I don't like to participate in communities that aren't inclusive anymore.

I did participate in fall for spike last year because the mods are nice people, and I didn't understand their take, but I wanted to do something towards a seasonal community.

However, I think this year I won't participate because I'm just too stretched with my own WIPs and I don't really like that rule. One person found me on MSN and complained to me about it and she's spangel, lol.

But then again, seasonal spuffy says no human AU spuffies, so I'm not contributing to them either.

It's a shame, but that's how I feel.

Yeah, I've checked it out, and they were quite... forceful. I guess they really hate Buffy. Not Spuffy, or else they'll be against Spander and Spangel.

Okay, firstly... Pretty kitty! Sooooo cute.

I know one of the Mods at fall_for_spike and she is lovely... Having said that I do find the no Spuffy thing hurtful and I don't really understand it... I understand that the mods have their reasons for not liking Buffy (but then I have fairly strong ones for not liking Xander but I wouldn't ever exclude him from good__evil).

I did write some Spike only fics for the comm last year... and if I get time (which I highly doubt) I will probably write something again this year simply because I like writing Spike-centric fics and enjoy the challenge, and also as stated one of the mods is a friend and she is just lovely. But yeah, I can definitely see your frustration and fully understand why you don't want to write for them... it DOES hurt to be told that anything and everything is acceptable except the pairing that you love.

Oh I don't doubt that they're nice people. And it's not that I don't think they can make their own rules. If they just said only unconventional pairings, or only slash pairings, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Or hell, if they said the no spuffy rule in a slightly nicer way, no problem either. It's that they single spuffy out to insult it, while the other pairings are almost just as bad onscreen.

see, seasonal spuffy might have a no au rule, but they're not insulting about it to human au fans. (and ok, I may just be biased in that I don't really like human au myself, I happen to like reading about vampires and slayers*eg*)

Thing is, I did write for fall_for_spikelast year, but then like now it just... annoyed me to have that rule. Not like I would have written a spuffy fic necesserily, but just the idea of how they phrase it.

As far as I know, it started after the mods felt that summer_of_spike was too spuffy oriented.
They basically blamed the mod of that com for somehow making it so that there was too much spuffy in the com.
(which is nonsense, since the mod isn't at fault for what members plan to make for the com)

Hon, I had to read AU human spuffies, so I'm not really wild about all of them, to be honest. It's just I don't like it when the imagination is limited and only rewarded if it suits certain biases.

I'm really limited in my time now, so that's just a decision I made, and it's not meant to be like insulting or to tell anyone how to run their thing. It's merely how I figure out where to spend my time.

Hadn't read the rules for fall_for_spike before since I wasn't planning on participating. Read them now and I think they handled the no spuffy-thing wrong. I'm not a spuffy shipper anymore. I used to be but have now moved to other pairings. Still people posting spuffy doesn't bother me. If I don't feel like reading it, I just skip it. Also, as some people have already said, it's not like Buffy was the only person treating Spike badly. If one scene in a seven year long arch makes them exclude a certain pairing there are quite a few others who should be excluded too.

I mean, I wouldn't mind a Tara com without Willow, but only if you say it's to give a chance to show Tara as a person rather than as Willow's girlfriend. In that manner you can refuse a canon ship, without insulting those that do ship the pairing.

What fall_for_spike is doing, to me feels like creating a Summer of Tara com, saying any pairing goes except for Willow/Tara because Willow raped Tara in All the Way. And then repeating a few times how even bestiality is better than Willow/Tara.

Interesting enough I checked out fall_for_spike just recently and even though I'm just a reader not a writer I was really turned off by their user info and did not friend them. I agree that there just seems to be a better way to do it. Oh well. As you said, no need to make a big deal about it. Just by not friending it, I'm happy with my statement. To each their own.
