Can someone explain to me why I'm slowly but surely getting annoyed by fics where the author makes it a point to say that "Buffy wasn't good enough"

Don't care what she wasn't good enough for in the fic, but that whole...

"oh that's just Buffy, she doesn't matter. Oh Angel does, but Buffy's unimportant and doesn't matter"

Slams head on the desk.

And oh yes, fics where the fang gang is not just nicer to Spike but goes all 'you evil bastards' to the scoobs for being mean to Spike. I mean, yeah they were decent, but they weren't that much nicer to him. 

Or the old Angel sucks and he's really evil and he's just a jerk and ....

Think I'm just getting annoyed with character bashing again. Why is it that everytime I find a fic I like, I end up getting annoyed by the charbashing.  But not just by the charbashing, it's the whole thing where all of a sudden one or two of the chars is supernice to Spike and we're not shown why these chars (but not the others) have suddenly changed their behavior towards him. 

Am annoyed with all the ooc'ness.

Dru has managed to get on the bed and spent all of last night, up to 2:00 AM purring and asking for cuddles.

Negative Note: Dru spent all of last night up to 2 AM purring and asking for cuddles while I had to start work at 6 AM  with my alarm clock going off at four. (am very sleepy now),

I read the first part of a fic last night where season 3 unsouled unchipped Spike would never rape or hurt a girl! Even Angel makes excuses for him saying he's just not like that and if he did happen to hurt Buffy in that way there must have been extenuating circumstances! He must have been DRUNK I tells ya!

You don't want me to get started on the way she makes a raped Buffy sound just like a rape victim while trying to reassure us that Buffy doesn't feel raped.

The really bothersome part is that the writer has a great ear for dialog & overall plot mechanics but their grasp of characterization is immature at best and shallow & two-dimensional at worst.

She shows real, promise and yet there's NOTHING I cold say that would make her see that her characterizations are killing her fic! ::pout::

I can name the fic from what you've said so far, and you are right, the writer shows great promise. That's all from me.

I agree with you that if the characters are acting differently from canon then there should be adequate explanation of why that is the case. Bashing for the sake of it - unless in a comedy farce type way - should be avoided (glances over shoulder to Angel in BB. Ooops!) but I guess sometimes the temptation is too great.

Dru sounds a right little sweetie - just have to get her used to your routine a bit more! *hugs*

People do that with Lana in Smallville too. There's always a tendency to bash characters if they didn't work for you. I wonder why people bother including them in a fic, if they don't care for them

Hmmm...if you can name the fic maybe I should delete the comment...::checks liliaeth's friends list::...nup. It should be safe.

To be honest I was quite captivated by the fic, in spite of the wincing I did every time she mischaracterized someone. I read the entire thing (that's written so far) in one sitting voraciously last night which is a testament to how GOOD I think this writer will be if they ever smooth out their characterizations.

I don't think I've ever seen a better Giles voice.
