(ok, I'll admit, I cheated, I took the next eight lines...

When a pet didn’t know the first, how could you hope for them to understand the second? And it was only when they understood that, that you could get them to understand the basic points of discipline.

Her mother had always told her that there are five things a pet has a right to, starting with discipline, a clear knowledge of boundaries, followed by a mix of primary needs like food, water and bowel cleansings, joined of course by the right to a place to rest, even if only at their owner’s feet and ending with the pets right to be cared for when sick, whether that care came from putting them down or nursing them back to health would depend on the owner.
