On and on the questions went. Did he like the food, wasn’t he cold, wouldn’t he want more clothes. All well intended; but enough to drive even the most patient creature insane. By the time the boy finally fell asleep all Spike could think of was to try and escape. Anything to get away from the barrage of questions. He went up the stairs and grabbed for a bloodsnack, it seemed though that they weren’t in their usual storage place. As hungry as he was, he didn’t think he could even try to escape without a snack.

He looked through the window, at the neighbourhood outside and wondered if anyone would notice if he just slipped out, through the window, over the hedge. The idea of just leaving through the front door didn’t even enter his mind. He was careful not to bump into anything as he … Only to freeze as something peeped underneath his foot.

He bowed over; he just stepped on one of his chewing toys. It resembled a dog, a heavily coloured rubber cartoon dog. He threw it away, it peeped again. Nobody responded. He moved again, hoping against hope that no one would wake up and notice the vampire at large in the house. He was free, even if he was still as trapped as ever.

Food, he needed it and fast. He tried not to think of why he was going for a bag of petfood when there were five potential fresh meals in the house. Well two, he wouldn’t eat the other three, even if he was promised an eternity of getting to watch Timmy best Tabitha. Well, …

No he wouldn’t. Definitely.

Cordy was still sleeping when she finally dared to get out of the bed. Buffy tried not to wake anyone up as she went down the stairs. It was still early in the morning, early enough for it to still be dark outside. She was almost shocked when she saw William in the kitchen grabbing a bloodsnack. She almost smiled, catching him with his fingers in the cookiejar like that. It took her a moment to realize the other big thing. He'd left the basement and was in the kitchen, against his orders.

For a moment he looked like he was about to make a run for it and then he fell to his knees. But there was something in his eyes, something that didn't look like submission. He tried to hide it, but it was there. She stared around looking for a weapon, but the only ones there were the kitchen chairs and mom would freak if she broke any of those.

"William..." He tried to run for it then. She stood in his path before he could get away from the kitchen. He pushed her, a huge offence, it made his ears start bleeding but he didn't stop. She threw a chair up against him, stopping him just long enough for her to force him down as she grabbed him in a hold.

"Please, please don't tell. Just stake me, please don't make me go back."

More than anything else it was the fear in his face that made her let go, he was shaking on the floor, desperate for a way to get out. She couldn't let him escape. She couldn't let him go. Her heart broke at the thought of having to send him to the farm, she didn't want to, but she didn't want to stake him either.

"Stay down" she ordered.

He didn't obey, made a grab for her again. She knocked him out cold. It was oddly easy to do, he was still weak and his ears were still bleeding. She had him chained up before he even managed to wake up again. The basement wasn't an option, not with Angel there, so she'd taken him to the living room. His hands were chained to his feet. Magically enhanced cuffs around both wrists and ankles. She was holding a gag to make sure he couldn't try and bite her. She put it down as she knelt down next to him, touching his face, too terrified to make a decision on what to do.

"Please just kill me."
The calm dignity in his eyes was what almost did her in. She ran back to her room and fell back down, supported barely by the bedroom wall.

Spike fought the chains as best as he could, but he knew even before he tried that it'd be useless. He was trapped. Soon Joyce and the others would wake up and they'd bring him back to the keepers. He bashed his head against the ground, almost hoping that if he did, if he could only crush his own head, it would keep him safe.

It was over.

Buffy came down and knelt down next to him again, she didn't say a word.
"How can I know you won't kill anyone? How can I William? I can't let you go."

He couldn't lie to her, couldn't make her false promises, and couldn’t tell her he'd never harm anyone again. It hurt, loving her, knowing she'd destroy him and he didn't know what to do.

"Kill me?" he asked again. But she wouldn't. Why wouldn't she at least give him that crumb, better to die free, than to live a slave. Didn't she get that?

"I can't ... I..."
Buffy got up.
"I need your word William. Promise me you won't try to escape, or harm anyone and I won't tell. But I need to know I can trust you."

Spike was broken in that moment, he'd have promised anything before, now he could just nod.
"I promise", he finally said.

She grabbed the lash then and he bowed down his head.
"I'm sorry William. But if I don't punish you now, then mom will realize that something is wrong."

And he forced himself to his knees and knelt down. The lash hit his hands as well as his buttocks, but he didn't cry out. Buffy pulled out a second time, but it never reached him. He looked up and saw Joyce standing there on the landing, watching them. Joyce took the lash from Buffy. She didn't say a word, just asked Buffy to take him to the basement. Spike wondered if she knew.

Xander woke up as they reached the floor. Buffy tightened Spike's chains and bound them to a metal ring on the wall. He didn’t fall asleep again, he knew he should have gone with the eternity of Passions. Without the reruns.
