They still went to the mall that afternoon, mom had insisted on it. She said that she couldn't take away William's only chance to see his grandsire, especially with Angel's oncoming mindwipe. She still thought it was cruel to them both. William was quiet in the car, more so than usual. Normally him and Willow would be making some kind of noise in the cage, now... Willow was talking, but it seemed like William wasn't even listening to her. She wondered why.

When they got to the pen, Willow instantly moved to the doll division. Faith paid up in advance for the damage she'd cause while William just sat at the window. Angel went up to him and sat down next to him. William didn’t even respond to him, Buffy could still feel his eyes on her by the time they left. Faith managed to get her to buy some lipstick that she knew she'd probably never use. Not like she cared, she just wanted to see if she could find Xander again, she had to talk to him.

"Oh come on Buffy, don't you think it's funny?"

She shook her head, wondering what Faith was talking about, before seeing it. A vampire clown was balancing a bunch of crosses in the air. His master kept a close eye on him and the vampire's hands were barely protected with lacy gloves. Buffy turned away from it, she couldn't keep looking at the scene as the vampire almost dropped one of the crosses and managed to grab it just in time to avoid it from hitting him in the face. Faith yelled after her, but she didn't respond. She felt pushed out of the way as a blond streak ran past her. She looked back to see blond hair over a torn pink bodysuit.

"Stop her! Stop that vampire bitch!"

The coach was running after the girl, a whip in his hand. Buffy didn't know what was going on but took off on a run after Harmony, feeling her out like the teacher at school was training them to do. She found her hiding in the changing boot two stores down, trembling in fear. The once pretty girl now looked dishevelled, still looking as if she were 15 with huge eyes. Her eyebrows were singed and her ears were bleeding, she was covered in blood. She could see where the whip had hit her.

"Hello Harmony."

"Bad bad bad bad..."

"What's wrong?"

"Didn't look, promise no look master, promise no look."

Buffy threw a glance back and saw Harmony's brother Brian standing there. The boy was about 20 and looked like the very cliché of a surfer. Blond hair, tanned skin. He was also the one that had gotten the brains in the family. Not that he looked like it.
"Harmony? Please Harmony I didn't."

But the young vampire wasn't listening. When the coach showed up, all he had to do was tap his leg and Harmony crawled up to him. He pulled her up and kissed her lips, before throwing her to the ground again. He didn't say a word to Brian, instead he just smiled at the young man and made sure to grab Harmony's ass as he pushed her on hands and knees. Forcing her to crawl after him as he pulled her leash.

Brian could do nothing but stare there and watch while his sister was humiliated. Buffy could see that his hands were white with the effort as Brian tried to keep himself under control.
"He hit her just because, because I told him he couldn't do it. Because I tried to protect her from him. He..."

Brian was one of the least girly men she knew but right at that point he looked like a child that needed comfort. Buffy tried to help him, but he pulled away from her.
“He always looked at her that way, even when she was human. Like she was the last pie in an all you can eat buffet. We were about to sue him for harassment when she got kidnapped. And now that bastard can do whatever the hell he wants with her and we're the bad ones if we try to stop him. So don't you dare tell me that everything will be all right!" He started sobbing for real this time. “I’m so tired of people telling me things will be all right.”

Buffy could see him cringe when they both heard the sound of a whip outside of the store. Then a hand stopped the whip. Buffy stared through the window and saw Xander standing in between the vampire and the coach. Both of them in a glaring match, Xander had the end of the whip in his bleeding hand.

"You bastard. You murdering bastard."

"You can't prove a thing boy. And if you say another word, I'll sue you for slander."

Xander stood there, frozen one second, the next his fist hit the coach in the face.

"You little..." Pulling the whip once again, this time planning to hit Xander. Buffy grabbed the man's arm before he could even come close.

"Don't even think about it." Buffy didn't think she could have ever imagined a glare that venomous in her life. Almost like the coaches face turned into that of a demon through the sheer evil of it. Not that he was, a demon that is. If he had been, the tests would have revealed it when he applied for the job. Like poor mister Doyle, the substitute that had turned out to be half Brachen. The man hadn't even known about it, not he was living in some demon refuge camp over on Guatano Bay. He'd been much nicer than their regular math teacher.
Buffy still didn't know what he'd done wrong to deserve that, just because his dad happened to be a demon.

William was holding one of Angel's colouring pens. Angel had brought it to him to try and pull his attention. William had tried to draw the fairy lady. But like usual, it looked nothing like her. And he'd never been one to draw within the lines. The words slipped through his head and through his pencil...

"My heart expands
'tis grown a bulge in it
inspired by your beauty
effulgent"

He stared at what he'd drawn, unable to read it for now, but he knew there was more to it than just scratches. He quickly took the black pencil and drew over it before anyone could see it. He didn't really know what he was hiding, but a voice inside of him made it clear that not doing so would destroy him.

He was still staring at it when Joyce arrived at the pen to pick him up. He heard something about Buffy and the cops. He was holding on to the paper and no one told him to drop it as Joyce took him to the car. Buffy didn't come home till later that evening. A stamp on her hand. Joyce was furious.

"Well what did they expect me to do, to just let him hit Xander with that thing? It was bad enough that he attacked poor Harmony like that, but he was about to use that whip on a human!"

Joyce sighed in worry.
"I know sweetie. And they will take Harmony away from him. But you can't harm a human, if you do it again... do you know the trouble you could be in? The mere idea, a slayer attacking a human... It could destroy any hope you have of ever getting into college, of having a job. It could even get you neutralized..."

William didn't like that word; he mewled in fear for Buffy. But he knew as well as her mother did that nothing would stop the girl once she got going. And he loved her for it.

It was the first night since William arrived that he was made to sleep in the basement. Buffy was being punished after all. He didn’t see why he had to be punished as well. He turned over on his pallet and held on to Mr Gordo. His only friend here in the dark.

Friend.

He hated being alone, hated having to listen, hated…
Hated…
Hated

Buffy

He loved her. And his sleep was filled with murder.

"Xander I have to talk with you. I don't know anymore. Why does everything feel so wrong?"
She lay back on her bed, half hidden under the sheets as she broke the rules. She just had to call to Xander and see if he was ok. That was much more important than being grounded.
"You're right. I know, it's just... I didn't think about it."
She hadn’t thought about many things.
"I'll try, be careful."
His grin through the phone was infectious, she smiled back.
"Of course I am, why would the coach come after me, he'd be a fool if he did, not after..."
There was nothing to worry about, nothing at all.
